Environmental Policy:
Bernhard’s Nurseries Limited is a producer of field grown trees and hardy ‘container grown’ nursery stock. As a British grower we strive to support the horticultural industry and provide businesses throughout the UK with responsibly grown plant material.
Bernhard’s will endeavor to:
- Use the absolute minimum amount of chemicals on our nurseries, preferring to use good cultural growing and preventative techniques to limit pest and diseases.
- Grow everything in Peat Free sustainable compost using bark from FSE approved managed UK timber plantations. FSE bark topping is also used on all our own grown stock to reduce weed potential and conserve water.
- Invest in new technology’s to reduce our environmental impact such as new low emission vehicles.
- Use mycorrhizal fungi across the nursery to ‘build better roots’ helping us grow sustainably and achieve a zero soil impact plants.
- Improve the efficiency of energy use within the organisation increasing the use of ‘renewables’ wherever practicable.
- Reuse and recycle across the group producing as little waste as possible. Using sustainable methods of packaging wherever practicable.
- Endeavour to exceed industry environmental codes of practice now and in the future.
- Hold full digital plant records, maintain the new ‘physical’ plant passport attached to each batch item (as of the 14/12/2019 APHA and European amendments)– all of which follow stock from production / purchase and goods inward, to invoice.
Bernhard’s Bio Security statement:
- The company will comply and exceed all UK and EU (where relevant) environmental legislation for the protection of the environment.
- Where importing is necessary we work with all government agencies to ensure that correct records are kept and plant passports & correct import notification paper work is issued.
- Hold full digital plant records, maintain the new ‘physical’ plant passport attached to each batch item (as of the 14/12/2019 APHA and European amendments)– all of which follow stock from production / purchase and goods inward, to invoice.
- Hold all purchased stock as far as practicable in ‘quarantine areas’ until it has been inspected or for up to 12 months before mixing with other ‘own grown stock on site.
- Maintain our levels of staff training in pest and diseases along with regular supplier visits to ensure Bernhard’s quality, continuity and bio security.
- Work with suppliers, maintaining good communications, paperwork and sustainable nursery practices.
The above will be achieved by monitoring and making continuous improvements to our systems and practices. This will insure that the highest standards are maintained across the group. This policy will be maintained and checked on an annual basis keeping it up to date. Bernhards make this policy available to all staff, customers, suppliers, and the general public.
